Daylight Savings- Change your Clocks, Change your Batteries
It’s Daylight savings time! As you change your clocks backward, USA Fire Protection wants to remind you to change your smoke alarm batteries. According to the NFPA, 40% of home fires occur in homes without working smoke detectors, and 25% of home fire death resulted from smoke alarms with missing or dead batteries. Smoke alarms provide you with an early warning and additional time to escape in the event of a fire. Not only do they provide an early warning, but they also increase your chance of surviving a fire by 50%.
Additional things to remember about smoke detectors:
- Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of your home including sleeping rooms
- The life span of a smoke alarm is 8-10 years and should be replaced during this time
- And of course, change the batteries in your alarms each time you change your clock for daylight savings
Smoke alarms alert occupants to a potential fire. While fire sprinklers significantly increase the chance of suppressing a fire. Having a winning combination of smoke alarms AND fire sprinklers will cut the risk of a home fire death by more than 80%.
